Music

An exciting and fast-growing PE backed music rights start-up created with the aim of giving artists more control and ownership of their music. This was the number 1 and only in-house finance role and the 5th permanent hire within the company that was rapidly expanding with aggressive growth plans looking to double in revenue and employees within the first 12 months. PE Backed music related organisations are extremely rare and consequently the pool of candidates with this exposure/skill-set in the UK market was extremely limited.

This was the first internal finance hire for the company,  an extremely pivotal & broad role covering all aspects of accounting, commercial finance and managing the relationship with their Private Equity Backers.

The Brief

The brief changed considerably during the process. Initially the owners were keen to get a more junior Head of Finance/FC who could also fulfil some more of the operational/music specific duties such as income tracking, revenue assurance and then a higher-level CFO on a part-time basis. In both scenarios music experience was essential.  During Consultation and on our recommendation,  they concluded an FC/HoF was too junior and broad and as managing the relationship with the PE firm was essential, as well as being the Head of Investor Relations – this experience would only be gained in a number 1/FD role. A part-time CFO hire would probably be too senior,  as would not be hands-on enough and be able and willing to complete the tasks in 3 days (they did not have the budget for a full time CFO).  As a consequence, we eventually agreed to source a mid-level FD with a view to move to CFO in 12-18 months, stripping out the non-finance responsibilities whilst maintaining the music industry specialism. PE / corporate finance experience was kept as highly preferred but not essential.

The Results

The client interviewed six candidates, two from our networks and four proactively sourced, at a range of seniority junior FD/Head of Finance to CFO.  They initially favoured higher level CFO’s but on advice. Considered a slightly lower level FD who had the gravitas & capability to manage the C Suite relationships but would also roll their sleeves up and compete the more hands-on accounting duties whilst growing into the position. The successful headhunted candidate was a rare mix of music, corporate finance/investment banking experience and matched all the requirements. It was a rapid, efficient process with client and candidate very pleased with the outcome.
