I recently had the pleasure of interviewing entrepreneur David Gormer, who shared with me insight into his business and also his journey from ACA to becoming a startup founder (which you can read here) .
Tell me about Square Mile Accounting
Square Mile Accounting is an accountancy practice specialising in working with technology startups. Our USP is that we’re 100% Xero – a cloud accounting platform that’s currently very hot in the tech sector. Most SME’s in the tech sector are expected to work with Xero to a degree, but we’re 100% Xero so our technical ability sets us apart from the competition. Between this and our expert knowledge of the startup industry we’re uniquely placed to help small business owners face the challenges of scaling their business.
What is your role within the business?
I have a very varied role – currently I manage client relationships and conduct sales meetings on top of my technical accounting work.
How did you go about building your team?
Starting out is never easy, but trust is the key. Working with a recruiter that you can trust to find the right candidates is exceptionally helpful as it frees up your time to build the business. Our recruiter understands hiring for startups is different to standard recruiting. They know the importance of hiring for personality and capability. Once you’ve found the right person you can give them the training in the skills the business needs, so they can grow with the business.
How important would you say it is to have employees who are experienced in or passionate about tech?
As I mentioned personality, fit and capability are all important factors that we believe outweigh knowledge and experience. Passion for technology is very important, because if you don’t have it there are plenty of others that do. Obviously we’re very well versed with Xero and their bolt-on ecosystem, but we still get excited by working within the tech sector.
Your business was built to provide start ups with an online outsourced accountancy service. With masses of start ups popping up daily, how is your business being perceived, especially the online presence?
We’re different to most accountancy firms and our approach reflects our specialist focus. Our clients appreciate our innovations, from video calls to e-signing. They also appreciate that we have experience and insight at navigating through the challenges that startups face.
Our expertise in technical aspects such as R&D tax credits, SCIS and EIS are all integral to our flexible strategy, as no two startups face the same problems.
What does the future hold for SMA?
We now face the challenge of scaling while maintaining our great service. We’re also planning on bringing our expertise to a number of other sectors such as retail, hospitality and property. We’ll also work towards being put forward for a number of other awards in the next year.
You’ve been nominated for ‘Most Innovative Independent Practice’ at this year’s British Accountancy Awards as well as being a Xero Gold Partner, Receipt Bank Silver and working with CrunchBoards. How does it feel to be gaining so much recognition in the market place from such great companies/institutes?
It’s absolutely incredible! It’s an honour to be working with such ground breaking software companies.
Square Mile Accounting specialise in using cloud-based accounting solutions that make your life easier. Switching to Xero can save you hours each month and put you in control of your business. Convert quickly and easily from Sage, QuickBooks, Excel or any other accounting software.
