Commercial Finance Manager

This role was as a consequence of growth. The Head of Finance, and line manager for the new hire, was required to take on a more strategic role to manage the continued business growth and expansion. This created a requirement for a new hire to manage the day to day running of the commercial finance function and act as the go to person for all finance queries for many of the non-finance stakeholders. Additionally, the business had recently acquired a small digital media business and the new Commercial Finance Manager would also have full responsibility for finance.

Role Requirements

The remit for the role included responsibility for producing high quality finance business partnering support to the media/editorial division on a daily basis, as well as wider business units on an ad hoc basis. They needed someone who could come in and drive the evolution of management information and analysis currently and develop the financial acumen of the newly acquired digital media business. The role also required someone who could contribute to strategy through the development of budgets, forecasts and business plans to help shape business activity at a strategic and operational level.

The Brief

During the briefing the hiring manager highlighted the importance of candidates interpersonal and business partnering abilities, as a key element of this role would be supporting non finance stakeholders. It was critical that candidates had a proven track record of business partnering with a wide range of stakeholders, building strong relationships, trust and credibility. The client did not require an individual from a digital / publishing background but were keen on candidates from a similar bigger business background due to the size of the transactions they would be dealing with. It was essential that candidates were either CIMA, ACA or ACCA qualified and ideally with a few years post qualified experience working in a commercial finance / business partnering role.

A Recruitment Partnership

A shortlist of six candidates was submitted to match the client’s criteria. Of the six candidates submitted,  one really stood out and was selected an initial first round virtual interview. The candidate impressed at first stage and was swiftly booked in for a second and final stage interview in person where they met with the Head of Finance once again as well as the MD of the division.

The turn around time from the first interview to when the contract was signed was two weeks and was delivered within the specified budget.

A strong understanding of the existing finance team and their backgrounds was extremely helpful throughout this process.
